Time for talking

This year promises to be the most challenging in living memory for the shopping centre development community. The jury is out on where property values are going - some analysts are forecasting a crash while others believe a soft landing is the most likely scenario.

And while the current year will see a slowdown in new shopping centre openings the development pipeline is still operating at full capacity with a new generation of bigger and more complex schemes on the drawing board.

With this in mind Shopping Centre Ireland is promoting a new one-day conference to bring together all sectors of the industry to address the unprecedented challenges that the current market presents.

The All Ireland Retail Property Forum will take place at the Conrad Hotel on Earlsfort Terrace in Dublin on Thursday 18 September. The day will be divided into four streams addressing the four big boxes that developers and their advisors have to tick to deliver a successful development: site assembly (including planning and infrastructure); obtaining funding; attracting retailers and attracting consumers.

Although the event is still some months away invitations are already out to high level speakers from government and industry, who will be able to give a unique insight into the current development climate.

It is our intention that the All Ireland Retail Property Forum will become an annual fixture for the Irish property, retail and construction communities and now, when quality information is at a premium, is exactly the time to launch such an event.

And to complement the daytime conference, Shopping Centre Ireland is delighted to announce that its highly prized awards will be granted in Ireland for the first time. On the evening of the conference the Conrad Hotel will become the glittering venue for the first All Ireland Retail Property Awards, recognising best practice and best people in the shopping centre industry.

The awards will cover seven categories:

? Shopping Centre manager of the Year at a small centre (up to 300,000 sq ft)

? Shopping Centre manager of the Year at a large centre (over 300,000 sq ft)
