Footfall fails to ignite

Springboard reports another lacklustre week for footfall

The final week before payday proved lacklustre for retail performance with the Springboard Index (a weighted average of high street, retail park and shopping centre performance) revealing an annual decline in footfall of 2.1 per cent despite an increase of +1.0 per cent against the previous week. This annual drop was comprehensive across the country with all but the South East feeling the slowdown in numbers. This is a further decline on the same week of 2015 when numbers fell across every region of the UK with an overall result of 0.7 per cent.

Shopping centre performance fell by 4.1 per cent against 2015, despite an overall rise of +1.8 per cent in numbers from the previous week, dropping in all but the South East which increased by +1.0 per cent. The low of 11.5 per cent in Greater London is compounded by the weekly drop of 0.9 per cent in the region, a result echoed in the other location types with a drop of 1.7 per cent week-on-week for retail parks and a slowdown of +0.3 per cent in the high street. Retail park traffic numbers also declined slightly, finishing 0.1 per cent against last year, albeit with a weekly increase of +2.0 per cent, a reflection of the slowdown in retail park performance which has been prevalent since Q2 of this year. Performance across the country for retail parks was relatively flat with a high of +1.3 per cent in the South East and a low of 3.5 per cent in Wales.

The high street also saw poor performance last week with an overall drop of 1.9 per cent despite increases in both the South West and Wales. Following on from the late summer sunshine of the previous week, which had given a resurgence in footfall to many areas, high streets saw an increase of +0.3 per cent as 5 of 10 regions continued to capitalise on the September sun.
