The Broadway unveiled
Published:  05 November, 2015

The Broadway has opened its doors to the public in Bradford.

Construction on the £260m centre - the largest retail development to open in the UK this year at 570,000 sq ft - began in January 2014.

Located in the heart of the city centre, The Broadway is owned by Meyer Bergman alongside investment partners Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan and Alberta Investment Management Company, and developed and managed by Westfield.

The centre is expected to transform the retail experience in Bradford, having attracted over 30 new-to-the-city retailers and dining outlets including Debenhams - the first department store to operate in Bradford in over twenty years – and H&M, which had been voted the ‘most wanted shop’ by residents. Other tenants include Marks & Spencer, Next, Topshop/Topman, Superdry, Accessorize and Paperchase.

The Broadway includes over 70 shops, a six unit food court and 1,300 parking spaces.

A spokesperson from Meyer Bergman, said: “We’re delighted that the people of Bradford now have in Debenhams a unique department store for Bradford together with the multitude of new retailers and great new restaurants and cafes. We’ve invested in The Broadway scheme, alongside our partners, because we believe in the long-term opportunities represented by the city.”

Peter Miller, chief operating officer, Westfield UK & Europe, said: “The opening of The Broadway marks a fantastic day for Bradford. We are so proud that the centre is now open and ready to serve Bradford’s shoppers. This development will bring huge regeneration to the city centre in the form of increased footfall and retail sales to the benefit of local businesses, additional jobs, as well as acting as a catalyst for further inward investment which is already matching The Broadway’s.”

The Broadway is predicted by CACI to increase catchment spend potential by 78 per cent, whilst boosting footfall across the city by 40 per cent. It is expected that The Broadway will propel Bradford from 85th to 26th in the CACI UK retail rankings and make Bradford the third largest retail destination in Yorkshire.
