Friars Walk welcomes 350,000 on opening weekend
Published:  19 November, 2015

Friars Walk, Newport’s new retail and leisure destination welcomed 350,000 visitors during opening weekend, with 102,000 on launch day alone.

Designed by Leslie Jones Architecture, Friars Walk opened on schedule on 12 November with 25 of the stores, six of the restaurants and the eight screen Cineworld multiplex cinema trading, including retail anchors H&M, Next and Debenhams.

Chiquitos, Frankie and Benny’s and a Marks and Spencer Food Hall are to open in time for Christmas.

As one of only a few new shopping centres to launch in the UK this year, the Ł117m scheme is providing the basis for wider regeneration in Newport. The 390,000 sq ft open air shopping centre is fully integrated with the neighbouring Kingsway Centre and the wider retail offer in the city centre.

It is estimated that it will double retail sales in the city, adding Ł120m per annum, and Newport’s catchment is predicted to increase from 211,000 to 367,000 with an estimated footfall of 10-12 million per year.

Stuart Harris, from Queensberry Real Estate said: “We’ve been blown away by the response of everyone to Friars Walk, the response from both the public and traders has been overwhelmingly positive.”
