According to Springboard, the hottest days of the year so far have benefited retail footfall with consumers heading outdoors to enjoy the weather and purchase the new seasons trends. Footfall rose +4.7 per cent in the Springboard Index – a combination of all retail locations with boosts throughout all location types and across the UK.
Shopping centres however remained flat, which given the influx of warm weather is unsurprising as shoppers opted for open air environment. Although Scotland dropped –5.6 per cent, Greater London, North & Yorkshire and the South East all combined to counteract the effect. Shopping centre footfall also declined against the previous week, dropping –2.4 per cent.
Retail park visitors increased by +2.9 per cent against the same week last year, with the location type marginally ahead for the year to date against last year with an increase of +0.5 per cent, versus a year to date for the same week last year of +0.4 per cent.
High streets outperformed both retail parks and shopping centres, with an annual increase of +7.8 per cent and a rise in every area of the UK, led by North and Yorkshire with a +10.0 per cent change in footfall. In fact eight out of ten regions and nations increased visitor numbers by over 5.0 per cent.
